Fibre Arts :: BR Fun House Fractal - About

Aiming for a 3-ply DK weight, practice in consciously trying for a certain grist.

Planning

Fractal plies:

  1. Straight 1/3 of the braid, as-is (37.6g)
  2. Folded braid, to lengthen the colour changes (36.3g)
  3. Halved braid, to shorten the colour changes (36.3g)
Weights are not super accurate (it likely won't matter a whole lot because grist will be funky for this one while I figure it out).

Calculations from this post.

Aiming for 250m/100g,
Singles grist (m/g) is 2.5m/g x 3 = 7.5m/g
1m of singles = 1 / 7.5 = 0.133g/m
About 0.04g for 30cm.
I'm anticipating some extra loss because this calculation assumes that the singles are straight, but they lose some length in plying twist.
So, I'll try 0.035g in the sample (about 286m/100g).

Trying for about 20 degrees singles twist, 30-40 degrees plied. Keeping singles as fluffy as possible, spinning supported long draw from the fold default method, but with closer reference to the sample.

This one isn't for a specific project so it's alright to just give it a shot (more important to make some space for fibre). I'll consider it progress if I get more than 200m, if I get 225m in the correct weight I'm doing it right.

If my calcs are right, it should be pi * tan(ply twist angle) so I should expect the singles to need to be 2.64 times as long as the yarn (660m) for 40 degrees (if yarn is 250m), 1.81 times for 30 degrees (454m). This seems like a lot, though...for now, I'll work with the assumption to determine how far off from the expectation I am.
